The best way to decorate a Christmas Tree

There is nothing better than seeing your Christmas Tree perfectly dressed! But it’s actually easier said than done to achieve a professional looking tree.  In fact one of the most common questions we get asked is what is the best way to decorate a tree and what order is best for achieving the most professional look?

So we’ve collated this handy guide to support you decorating your tree from top to toe in the best way possible.

1.     Choosing the right sized tree

Choose your tree to actually fit your home! We see so many trees that are either over-sized or under-sized for the rooms they are positioned in.  Your Christmas Tree should be the central focus of your hallway, lounge or dining room and should be in proportion to the room size it is positioned in to achieve a balanced and professional look.

2.     Tree positioning

Once your tree has been positioned before you start to even think about decorations - make sure your tree is vertical from all angles! It is a great help if someone is able to step back and help you with this part!  Having a correctly positioned tree ensures an even approach to decorating.  After this, we always prepare the tree by fluffing the branches to make sure we achieve the fullest look possible.  This should be done for both real and artificial trees by simply separating each branch and if necessary, cutting back any excess branches where needed.

3.     Christmas Tree theming

Before we decorate we also suggest theming – this could be theming by colour, by style, by overall look or simply by getting all your existing tree decorations out and categorising them into groups of colours or types of decoration style.  By doing this you can order your decorations into clusters and work out how many of each style you have rather than taking a scattergun approach.  And if you are low on some decoration types - why not try experimenting by making your own decorations? We like to make frosted pine cones and add rustic touches with dried fruits such as orange slices with complimentary luxury ribbons for added textures.

4.     Tree lights

The best way to start decorating a Christmas tree is by putting the lights on first.  We often select two or three different types of coordinated lights to make sure the tree has enough twinkling glow without any annoying bare spots.  This can take quite a bit of time to get right, adjusting as you go to ensure the lights are well distributed throughout the tree and not just dangling on the outer edges. Putting the lights on first also inevitably helps you not to get in such a tangle and keeps everything organised.

5.     Coordinated baubles

Next you're baubles, choose one type or colour at a time, this will help you to get an even balance of distribution throughout the tree.

6.     Decorating in layers and clusters

Now we recommend layering coordinated accessories to compliment the baubles.  Again keep stepping back and check how the decorations are ordered to achieve a more uniform approach with clusters of decorations regularly repeated in patterns for a more professional look.

7.     Tree filler decorations

Once the main decorations are positioned, we often use Christmas Tree filler decorations such as artificial flowers and decorative garlands to add additional touches of luxury and extra fullness.

8.     Base dressing

To hide the base of which holds the tree, you can use fake or real presents, or alternatively, get creative with some beautiful material or even organising logs and branches will look visually pleasing

9.     Tree topper

The final touch is to pop an angel on top, a tree topper or even ribbon, the choice is yours!

10.  Relax and enjoy!

Switch your tree lights on and enjoy the magical moment of Christmas spirit, perhaps even with a spirit in hand!
